Frequently Asked Questions

A conveyor is a mechanical handling device which can continuously move materials or products from one location to another. This can reduce manual labour costs and increase efficiency. Safety can be improved as lifting and carrying heavy items is reduced.

Conveyors can automatically move your products from one area or process to another, without the need of manually handling products. Labour costs can therefore be reduced, which helps to reduce your costs and make you more competitive. This helps to keep your production continuously flowing through your site creating an efficient, cost-effective operation.

Have you considered how every hour of lost productivity will add up into days and months of lost operational costs. While labour costs are increasing, companies need to automate to stay competitive and ahead of the competition. Improve your productivity now, to see days, months and even years of cost saving benefits.

With all components neatly designed to fit together there is no limit to number of configurations that can be built. From an initial decision to select a stainless steel or aluminium construction and selection of conveyor width to suit your products to be conveyed the range of modularised components can quickly satisfy all your layout requirements.

When you factor in the additional design and engineering hours required to build a conveyor in-house the use of a pre-existing modular build is very in-expensive. Savings can also be realised as you can dispense with the involvement of expensive external third-parties. The overall cycle time from concept to installation can be short making further savings and beneficial operation can start quickly. The simplicity of the design also reduces the installation and commissioning costs as little experience is need. It does not need an expensive work force of highly skill technicians with special tooling to assemble the conveyors. Installations times are also minimised leading directly to costs savings. When you consider the physical savings with the increased efficiency, higher productivity and reduction in operational expenses (labour) any additional investment costs can quickly be recouped.

All functions required to instal the conveyor parts can be done with readily available simple hand tools like; a screw driver, spanner/socket and Allen keys.

There are some specialist tools available, such as a chain pin removal tool that are designed to make the job just that little bit easier, however these are not a necessity and for example; in this case a punch and hammer would also suffice.

The simple answer is no. all parts are designed to fit together and the rules assembly are quite simple.

In many cases the conveyors are required to interface with other machinery stations or perhaps even other automation systems such as robots. In many cases this can become a burden for the already overworked in-house engineering team or worst involve the selection and engagement of an expensive external engineering third-party. The simplicity of the Modu system negates this requirement. The fact that all parts have been configured into all possible combinations previously provides full confidence that the conveyors will work with a minimum of interruption for many years.

For simple systems or if this is the first time of involvement in such a system the Modu Sales Department can offer technical and commercial support to arrive at a solution that is both technically robust and commercially accurate thus allowing a full budgetary assessment and guaranteed spend.

The modification of any compatible preexisting conveyor is extremely easy to achieve. As the conveyors uses a series of modularise bolt-together components it is a simple case of undoing and adding the new components to suit the revised design layout. Using Modu components it is also possible in many cases to modify existing conveyors of manufactures other than Modu: if this is the case contact our local office for technical support.

The conveyor, even when assembled does not make up the complete “machine”. In this case there is no requirement for CE marking of component parts. What we can do is assist in providing builders with information to enable the achievement of all appropriate regulatory requirements.

It is recommended that speeds in excess of 50m.min-1 are avoided however with the use of additional wear strips and careful planning operational speeds up to of 65 m.min-1 are feasible. It should be cautioned that this requirement for additional performance comes at a cost or increased service intervals and the probability of greater wear.
#maximum operating speed.

The length of a conveyor is very dependent upon the route it takes and the load (weight of product, etc.).

The increasing tensile strength achieved as the chains get wider and therefore thicker also has an effect.

Discuss your requirements with our technical support engineers and your planned layout can be verified.

Modu do not offer a “pattern” copy for competitors’ conveyors. Modu have invested in their own systems that are considered to be equal if not better than other systems on the market. The market however is dominated by many standardised sizes so there is always a very good chance that Modu components can be mixed with existing components to modify a system or regain its serviceability. One exception to this is that chains cannot be mixed. Final confirmation regarding the compatibility should be sought on a case-to-case basis. This and any other technical assistance can be provided by our local Sales Department.

If the system you are currently running is originally from Modu then we can always offer solutions and full support.

Without exception the standard parts fit together with basic nuts, bolts and screws. To achieve the build no more than simple hand tools are required. Generally, the only exceptions are that wear strips may be fitted using rivets and the chain links use an interference pin. Some easy-to-use specialist tools are available to make these tasks even easier but the job can be achieved without.
#tools, #special tools, #assembly, #installation

There is no requirement to purchase and use special tools. Special tools are available to aid installation of the conveyors which may have a time and cost saving benefit if tasks are being repeated.

It is possible to supply motors and inverters however as these are from third parties we would apply a mark-up cost for handling the products. The motors and inverters would also need to be specified by the client so no engineering is saved and Modu could not indemnify or provide warranty for the selected units.

It is not the intention of the Modu Systems Europe Ltd. business model to carry out turnkey installations. Our intention is to support conveyor builders or perhaps one-off end users to achieve a suitable conveyor system to satisfy their requirements in the most cost-effective way.

Please see the case studies on our website.

Modu group their conveyor types by nominal width. In each of these families of conveyors Modu designs and manufactures standardised components that can be arranged to suit any possible layout. It is at the discretion of a client to purchase what he needs to suit his application whether this is a full build or a modification of an existing system. As such each component or sub-assembly is simply interchangeable in its connecting method and can be considered a modular part/system.

Although Modu provide what can be classed as a full range of modularised components it is appreciated that conditions may not quite allow and slight improvements could be achieved with a more specialist approach. Modu can allow for this, whether it is a non-standard angle or an uncommon drive shaft for instance. This can be discussed and agreed with the Sales Department prior to an order. As the benefits of the standardised approach; cost efficiencies and minimised supply times are being compromised the consequence of this may be a small premium on the standard price or a short extension to the lead time.

Modu Systems in the UK keep on stock sufficient quantity of the most sought-after conveyors that suit current demand. In many cases upon receipt of a suitable purchase order and if the commercial conditions are satisfactory, sets of components can be sent out within 24hrs. For very large systems or the lesser popular systems, such as stainless steel a small additional lead time is required to allow the items to be sourced from the Parent Company in Malaysia.

It is possible to take the time saving advantage however international movements have become more complex in recent years so this would need to be agreed on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the UK Sales Department to discuss.
